Meditation plays a significant role in physical and mental wellness. Just ten minutes of meditation a day can show positive results. Meditation comes in many forms and can be performed as long or short as you would like. Even just one minute can reduce stress and anxiety and give your mind a refresh. The most common form of meditation in the West is mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is a mental training practice that involves concentrating on your breath, emotions, or sensations, and when the mind begins to wander, bring it back to your original focus.
To practice mindfulness meditation, start with taking a comfortable seat, this could be in a chair or on the floor and sit up straight. With your eyes closed, begin by focusing on the inhales and exhales of your breath and then bring your attention back to your breath whenever it starts to wander, which it undoubtedly will. Simple as that!
As previously stated, mediation has several physical and mental benefits, especially for seniors. Some of the benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Reduce the feeling of loneliness
- Alleviates stress
- Reduces depression and anxiety
- Improves focus
- Slows down the effects of Alzheimer’s
- Help manage chronic pain
- Reduces inflammation
- Improves circulation
- Helps with Insomnia
